A sought-after Choreographer, Movement Director, and Educator, Ashley is a dynamic force in the dance industry. He is renowned for his captivating choreography, visionary direction, and dedication to educating the next generation of performers. His diverse body of work spans concert stages, commercial projects, films, and operas.
His journey into the professional dance realm commenced in 2007 when Artistic Director Carla Maxwell handpicked him to join the prestigious Limón Dance Company. During this time with the company, he performed for countless audiences across five continents. Performing featured roles in works by dance luminaries such as José Limón, Anna Sokolow, Clay Taliaferro, Jonathan Fredrickson, and Donald McKayle. He went on to perform with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company, Helen Simoneau Danse and was honored to work closely with dance icon and three-time Tony Award winner Hinton Battle.
Additional performing credits include the film "Bolden," New York Fashion Week, national commercials for Target, ESPN, Skype, and numerous music videos and live shows.
Ashley has left an indelible mark on the dance landscape as a choreographer. His work has been commissioned by Charlotte Ballet II, Limón II, Houston Met II, Elon University, and four commissions for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. His work has also been presented at the Reverb International Dance Festival, the Capezio Ace Awards, and the White Wave International Dance Festivals. Other notable credits include choreographing Greensboro Opera's "Porgy and Bess" and providing movement direction for a series of P&G's Bold Japan commercials featuring model Miranda Kerr.
In the realm of film, Ashley's artistic vision shines through in a series of captivating dance films, including "NEXT," "The Way Back," and "Volant Matter." These films have garnered recognition from festivals such as the BronzeLens Film Festival, ADF's Movies By Movers, Greensboro Dance Film Festival, and ReThink Film Festival and were featured on Dance Magazine's Friday Film Break series.
Beyond his artistic endeavors, Ashley is deeply committed to nurturing talent and sharing his expertise with aspiring dancers worldwide. In 2021, he joined the UNCSA School of Dance faculty for a two-year appointment as a visiting guest professor. He has conducted master classes and workshops across North America, Europe, and Asia. Notable teaching credits include Duke University, Elon University, Steps on Broadway, The Limón Institute, Kanyok Arts Initiative, Regional Dance America, and Superior de Danze.
Recognizing his leadership and contributions to the dance community, Susan Jaffe appointed Ashley as the Artistic Director of UNCSA's Summer Dance Intensive and Professional Studies workshop in 2019. Additionally, he served as executive director for Hinton Battle's dance convention, "DanzOff," and sits on the board of Share The Movement, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting BIPOC dancers.
