He is known for his innovative movement style, artistic direction, and dedication to mentoring emerging performers. He began his professional career in 2007 as a member of the Limón Dance Company. During his time with the company, he toured extensively, performing across five continents. He later performed with the Lar Lubovitch Dance Company and Helen Simoneau Danse and appeared in numerous music videos and commercial projects, including the film Bolden, New York Fashion Week, and national commercials for Target and ESPN.
As a choreographer, his work spans a diverse range of mediums, including concert stages, commercial projects, operas, and films. His choreography has been commissioned by Charlotte Ballet II, Limón II, Chapman University, Flight Path Dance Project, Elon University, and his alma mater, the University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA). His work has been presented at the Peridance Salvatore Capezio Theater in New York City, the Reverb and White Wave International Dance Festivals, the Capezio Ace Awards, and the Dance for Life Festival in Los Angeles.
In 2022, Ashley co-founded GXA CREATIVE with longtime friend and collaborator Grady Bowman. Together, they form a dynamic choreography and directing duo known for crafting groundbreaking and visually stunning work for Broadway, off-Broadway, regional theater, TV/film, opera, circus, and dance companies.
In the realm of film, Ashley and Grady have choreographed, produced, and directed several dance films, including DWELLING, LIKE SUGAR, and The Way Back. These films have been official selections at festivals such as the BronzeLens Film Festival, Dance Camera West, ADF’s Movies By Movers, Greensboro Dance Film Festival, and ReThink Film Festival. They have also been featured on Dancefilmmaking.com and DanceMagazine.com.
Ashley was appointed Artistic Director of UNCSA’s Summer Dance Intensive in 2019 and joined the UNCSA School of Dance faculty in 2021 as a visiting guest professor. Additional teaching credits include Duke University, Elon University, Steps on Broadway, The Limón Institute, Kanyok Arts Initiative, Regional Dance America, and workshops in Japan, Bermuda, China, and Mexico.
